Milton Junior Chess School |
| Gord and I are pleased to announce the opening of the Milton Junior Chess School. Classes begin on Sept 9th at the Milton Senior's Activity Centre, 500 Childs Drive, Milton Ontario. Classes will be wednesday evenings from 7 to 9 pm, for 13 weeks to Dec 2nd. Lessons will be geared to kids (age 7 -16) with little or no knowledge, ie. Beginners. Cost is $ 120 per kid, additional siblings $ 80 each. Instructors are Gordon Gooding and Bob Gillanders. Both who have experience teaching at the Mississauga Junior Chess Club. Time will be split evenly between instruction and playing time. So both fun and learning. To register your child, please email us at robertgillanders@rogers.com Message to parents: If you don’t play yourself, you are probably asking, “Why does my child want to play Chess?” The answer is simple, it is FUN. The rules of the game and the movement of the pieces can be learned in a few short hours. Then it becomes a process of continuous learning where the student learns the complex array of strategic and tactical motifs of the game through a combination of lesson and play. The kids learn quickly and enjoy every step. The educational benefits of chess are undeniable. Chess is taught in school in many parts of the world. To quote the Chess Federation of Canada (CFC) website: Why Chess? Chess is the aerobics of the mind. Chess has been shown to improve academic performance. A youngster taking part in a chess program develops critical thinking; logic, reasoning, and problem solving abilities; memory, concentration and visualization skills; confidence; patience; determination; poise; self-expression; and good sportsmanship. And perhaps more importantly, children who participate in chess programs improve their self-esteem. Our program is designed for beginners. We will begin with the rules and piece movement but progress quickly covering many strategic and tactical motifs of the game. The curriculum will include: Rules of the game, piece movement Checkmate, Stalemate, Smothered mate Strategic themes – Material, Development, King Safety Tactics – Pins, Forks, X-rays, discovered checks, skewers, etc Opening principles – Development, Control the centre, Safety, Initiative, etc Combinations – double attacks, back rank mates, decoy, deflections, line clearance, obstruction, overload, etc Pawns – strong vs. weak pawns, pawn chains, promotions, en passant, pawn structure, etc Middle and endgame concepts – exchanges, posts, plans etc Other – good sportsmanship, offering draws, playing tournaments. Kids learn very quickly when they are having FUN. Our 2 hour sessions will be approx 1 hour of instruction and 1 hour of play. By the end of 13 weeks, they should be competitive with any of their peers. No guarantees, but most will have no problem beating their parents. You have been warned! |
